AI for Business: Where Should You Start?
AI is on every leadership agenda, yet many companies get stuck in the same loop: an impressive demo, an enthusiastic start, and a project shelved a few months later. The problem is rarely the technology — it is the starting point.
Why AI projects stall
- The goal is vague. "Use AI" is not a goal; "halve invoice processing time" is.
- Nothing is measured. Quality is judged by feel, and trust collapses at the first wrong answer.
- The data is not ready. Documents are scattered, outdated or lack clear access rules.
- It is not connected. The AI lives in a chat window instead of the workflow.
Choosing the right first project
A good first project is repetitive and high-volume, measurable today, low-risk (errors are easy to spot and fix) and has accessible data. Typical examples: classifying inbound emails or tickets, extracting data from invoices and delivery notes, and an internal knowledge assistant.
Measure first, then build
Before building, assemble an evaluation set: 50-200 real examples with known correct answers. Every change is measured against it, so you can report numbers instead of impressions. This discipline is what moves projects from demo to production.
Keep humans in the loop
The best use of AI is reducing people's repetitive work, not replacing their judgement. For high-stakes decisions the AI proposes and a person approves. When unsure, the system should say so and cite its sources.
Data security
- Enterprise API terms guaranteeing your data is not used for training
- Masking personal data before it reaches a model
- Access control so the assistant never answers from documents the user cannot see
- Logging of questions, sources and answers
- An on-premise option with open-weight models when data must not leave your network
Start with a proof of concept
Run a 2-4 week proof of concept on one process with your real data and a real evaluation set. It turns the investment decision from a guess into evidence.
